Douglas Drossman, MD : UNC
Effective communication skills to improve physician-patient relationship
Modern healthcare has driven a wedge between doctor and patient. Physicians have only several minutes to take a history, diagnose, and treat a patient. Even with all the incredible advances in medical technology patients feel a disconnect with their doctor, and that their care is suboptimal. Dr. Douglas Drossman, a world expert in treating the toughest GI diseases, will teach the audience how effective communication with patients can heal the doctor patient-relationship, decrease the likelihood of malpractice, and improve a physicians likelihood of diagnosing and treating what really ails patients.
Joseph Ravenell MD : NYU
The healthcare barbershop buzz: Taking healthcare to the patient
Changes in patients health takes place outside of the doctors office. How can a physician/health system improve the health of the community they serve? Dr. Joseph Ravenell of the NYU School of Medicine and a leader in community health will share his innovative experience effecting patients outside the walls of the hospital, and teach attendees how they can expand their reach, and influence their patients to make healthy choices.

Hacking Health: Designing for and understanding your health
It is apparent that the current design of our hospitals, clinics, and health information neither meets the needs of patients or physicians. Juhan Sonin, of MIT and Involution studios, will show attendees how design can be used to improve physician efficiency and patient outcomes.
Scott Johnson : Myelin Repair Foundation
Breaking from the Past to Breakthrough to Cures-Accelerated Collaboration Model
The current proposal, peer review, and grant research system is inefficient and costly. Scott Johnson, founder of the myelin Repair foundation, will describe how the Accelerated Collaboration Model exemplified by the Myelin Repair Foundation, results in focused research, improved collaboration, and faster results. Using these methodologies as an example, those in attendance will learn how to translate their research, and the research of their institutions into tangible results
Brian Forrest, MD : UNC
Keeping it Simple: How to Run a Private Practice in the 21st century and Thrive
The medical payment system has become increasingly complex and burdensome to physicians. The current private practice model is not improving patient outcomes, or meeting physicians needs despite increasing costs of care. Dr. Brian Forrest, a recognized leader in practice management, will teach attendees to assess whether their own practice is running efficiently, and show them that if they decrease overhead and improve collections, they can reduce fees, increase revenue, and focus on patient care

INTENSIVE: Dr. Drossman : Improving the Medical Interview and the Physician Patient Relationship: A Communication Skills Workshop
Note: LIMITED TO FIRST 50 REGISTRANTS. REGISTER NOW.
Friday, March 29, 2012, 9:00-11:00 AM
This workshop enhances Dr. Drossman's lecture on Thursday and goes deeper by demonstrating ways to help clinicians enhance their communication skills and optimize their interactions with patients. The techniques discussed are easy to learn, readily applied, and offer greater efficiency in patient care. These skills will be important as our health care system will likely evolve to reduce reimbursement for procedures and provide greater emphasis in the use of these "cognitive skills".
The workshop will cover a variety of topics using several interactive formats: Interactive sessions using video demonstrations with audience feedback:
- To provide techniques to improve medical interview data gathering
- To demonstrate how to obtain relevant psychosocial information
- To establish rapport and an optimal patient-physician relationship
- Facilitated small group learning sessions
- To enhance interview skills using role play with patient simulators.
- To provide methods to manage difficult clinical interactions (e.g., how to manage anger, how to address requests for more tests or for narcotics
- Take-home materials will be provided for further self learning.
- Evaluation forms will provide feedback for future sessions
